Hey guys! My name is Royce and these series of blogs will be about my journey in Seneca’s Software Development program. For now, I’ll be writing about my experience in DPS909–Topics in Open Source Development which I am currently studying from home here in Toronto.

What brought me to this course was the freedom to choose what topics I was interested in. It amazed me that there are real world projects that I would be able to contribute to and work on. The experience of working along side senior developers on a project that I was invested in is what set this course apart from the others. During this semester, my goal is to meaningfully contribute to an Open Source project and hopefully gain some experience in what the real world software development workflow is like.

The GitHub trending repo that I am currently researching about is a complete e-commerce app done solely in Flutter (link here). I picked this project because I am interested in mobile app development. Over the summer I learned how to make apps in Android but I’ve always wanted to develop something cross platform which is why Flutter has always been on my list of things to experiment with. I think that by researching into this project I will understand a bit more about Flutter and how to program in Dart. Hopefully, by the end of this course I will be able to bring my app ideas to life!

On an ending note, when I first started programming I would always come across the terms Open Source and the various GitHub repositories accompanying it. I never understood what made the term so special until I later realized that this community of fellow programmers helping each other build something is what makes Open Source programs great.
